Yayasan Sime Darby 'Putts' in RM435,993 for Cancer Research
KUALA LUMPUR, 14 December 2010 - Breast cancer awareness and research efforts in Malaysia received a positive boost today thanks to a RM435,993.00 contribution from Yayasan Sime Darby to the Cancer Research Initiatives Foundation (CARIF). The contribution was the result of various fund-raising activities carried out during the recently concluded Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia golf tournament.

A cheque presentation ceremony was held at the Sime Darby Convention Centre to commemorate the occasion. During the event, YM Tunku Tan Sri Dato' Seri Ahmad Tunku Yahaya, Chairman of the CARIF Board of Trustees, was on hand to receive a mock cheque from YBhg Datin Paduka Zaitoon Dato' Othman, Governing Council Member of Yayasan Sime Darby. Also present was YTM Dato' Tunku Putra Badlishah, Managing Director of Sime Darby Property Bhd.

Dato’ Tunku Putra Badlishah in his opening remarks during the event extended his appreciation to all the donors who have so generously contributed to the Cancer Research Initiatives Foundation or CARIF during the Charity Drive held in October. He further said that CARIF was selected as the sole beneficiary of Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia Charity Drive as the non-profit organisation shares a common objective with the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia organisers which is to address and defeat cancer.

Datin Paduka Zaitoon said, through the Sime Darby LPGA tournament, we raised funds for CARIF and this fulfils Yayasan Sime Darby's Community Development pillar. We are proud that CARIF is the chosen charity organisation due to its commendable research and awareness initiatives carried out over the last 10 years. She added that the Sime Darby Group has continuously supported world class cancer research efforts by CARIF, with the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia 2010 providing a key platform to raise more funds.

Nett proceeds from the ticket sales and gala dinner held in conjunction with the tournament made up a major part of the contribution to CARIF. Cash was also collected during the dinner from a special auction of personal items donated by PGA and LPGA Tour players. Among the notable items that went under the gavel were two golf drivers worth RM11,000 and RM10,000, and were signed by world renowned golfer Michelle Wie who had competed in the Sime Darby LPGA tournament.

The contribution from the tournament will be utilised for a collaborative research initiative between CARIF and Universiti Malaya to improve the outcome for breast cancer patients in Malaysia and to reduce disparities in cancer treatment and care. It can be treated especially if detected early. This is where greater awareness and understanding of this disease is important.

According to CARIF, in addition to breast cancer research, the proceeds collected will also be used towards a community outreach initiative called Patient Navigation Programme. This programme will see CARIF employ and train specialist breast cancer nurses and patient navigators who will be able to assist patients and provide accurate information that will enable those diagnosed to get optimal care. This is in line with reaching out to more Malaysians to enable proper diagnosis that can prevent late stage detection and as a result increase the number of breast cancer survivors in the country.
