Sime Darby Property Conferred the Frost and Sullivan Green Builder of the Year Award

Sime Darby Property Berhad (SDP) has been selected as the recipient of 2010 Malaysia Frost & Sullivan “Green Builder of the Year” Award, which is conferred upon the company which has shown outstanding achievement in 2009 in Malaysia. The award was presented to SDP based on how it had innovatively and effectively implemented building construction methodologies and integrated its projects with existing surroundings and infrastructure.

The award also recognizes how SDP has promoted community and environment sustainability in the design of building construction projects, its adoption of green concepts and environmental practices in its projects and the acceptance by end users. Calling SDP “a pioneer in township development since the 1970s”, Frost & Sullivan also described it as having a significant presence in the property development industry in Malaysia.

It added that SDP’s market position is also strengthened its successful launch and promotion of 10 residential townships. Besides Malaysia, the Sime Darby Property is active in Singapore, Indonesia, and Australia with property and asset management projects. “Most recently in 2009, the company became the first developer in the region to initiate carbon zero house project which is targeted to complete in 2010. Its effort in green residential initiatives include incorporation of green aspects in new township design and its construction, mobilization of resources, and technology applications such as solar power,” Frost & Sullivan’s Program Manager for Environment & Building Technologies Practice, Asia Pacific, Melvin Leong.

“Sime Darby Property’s successful green proposition in the industry is the result of its intense R&D activities, and is setting the benchmark in the industry. It also echoes the Malaysian Government’s effort in the implementation of green building concepts,” added Leong.

SDP’s townships are developed with a sustainable future in mind, adopting a wide range of progressive, environmentally-friendly and sustainable practices; which includes the use of the rainwater harvesting systems, formaldehyde-free finishes, recycled materials and all-natural products in the homes. Among SDP’s initiatives for a greener future are its “Idea House” which is a groundbreaking green model, conceived as a test bed for new ideas on sustainable architecture and green building technology.

Frost & Sullivan said that as a subsidiary of Sime Darby Group - one of the largest conglomerates in Malaysia and Southeast Asia, the company earns revenue of approximately RM 1.41 billion, an impressive figure despite the economic downturn in 2009.

Founded in 1961, Frost & Sullivan is recognized as a global leader in growth consulting with a proud history of providing cutting-edge innovative growth solutions and strategies to some of the world’s leading Global 1000 companies. The Frost & Sullivan Awards, introduced at a global level eight years ago, are presented to companies that demonstrate best practices in their industry, commending the diligence, commitment, and innovative business strategies required to advance in the global marketplace. These awards are conferred annually at global, regional and country-specific levels.
