Representatives of the Grande Metropole du Paris visited Battersea Power Station to see at first-hand how large, inner city regeneration schemes can delivered successfully in conjunction with new transport infrastructure. 
 
The delegation of 30 guests spent a morning at the Power Station learning about the importance of getting the right balance of shops, offices, homes and public space so that there is a genuine sense of neighbourhood being created. 
 
Another important observation was the priority which the team at Battersea Power Station attach to involving the local community so that it can benefit from the opportunities being created and have a say in the amenities being developed. 

Guest Speakers included Dame Caroline Spelman MP, former Secretary of State for the Environment, and Cllr Steffi Sutters, Cabinet Member for Wandsworth Council. Following speeches and questions in both French and English, the delegation visited Circus West Village ahead of its formal opening later this year. 
 
Commenting on the event, Dame Caroline Spelman MP, said: 
“It is a great credit to Battersea Power Station and to Wandsworth Council that a delegation of French mayors came to see how to make a project of this scale and ambition finally happen, and to see at first-hand how they have worked with the local community and how the impact of jobs and training opportunities are being felt locally.”

Cllr Steffi Sutters, Cabinet Member for Wandsworth Council, said: 
“We are determined to make sure that the regeneration which needs to take place in Nine Elms and other places throughout the borough enhances the quality of life and opportunities for people living nearby, in the case of Nine Elms with world-class new transport links, acres of new public parkland as well essential community infrastructure like a school, medical centre and police accommodation.”

“It’s a great honour for Battersea Power Station to host a delegation from Paris who have come to see at first-hand how complicated, inner city sites like the Power Station can be successfully regenerated to bring about real improvements in the quality of life for local people. By creating new parkland, building a new underground line connection and putting together a blend of shops, offices, restaurants and homes we have tried to make sure there is something for everybody at the Power Station and this approach is one that others around the world want to learn more about.” 
 
Grande Metropole du Paris is an organisation which has been set up in Paris to develop a masterplan for regenerating key areas in the City of Paris and the surrounding inner suburbs. The delegation visiting London was made up in large part of Mayors from the communes involved.

• Battersea Power Station is owned by a consortium of Malaysian investors comprising S P Setia, Sime Darby and the Employees’ Provident Fund. Management of the development is being undertaken by British based Battersea Power Station Development Company.
