Battersea Power Station was pleased to welcome YB Loke Siew Fook, the Minister of Transport for Malaysia, for a tour of the vibrant new riverside neighbourhood in Central London on Wednesday 29th November 2023.

The Minister of Transport learnt about the integration and delivery of public transport infrastructure in the masterplan, which has been key in the transformation of the 42-acre brownfield site into a mixed-use destination where residents and visitors can live, shop, work, dine and play, centred around the restored Grade II* listed Power Station, which opened to the public in October 2022.

The ambitious development project has been led by a consortium of companies comprising Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB), Sime Darby Property, S P Setia and the Employees Provident Fund (EPF).

New transport solutions are at the heart of the Battersea Power Station masterplan, with the Northern Line Extension (NLE) having opened in September 2021, marking the first major extension to the London Underground Network this century. Providing Battersea Power Station with its very own Zone 1 London Underground station, this riverside neighbourhood is now only 15 minutes from the West End and the City, transforming the connectivity of the estate for visitors, residents, workers and tourists alike. Today, more than 2,500 residents, 6,500 workers and thousands of visitors use the Battersea Power Station Underground station every week, with more than eight million entries and exits reported between September 2022 - September 2023.

The Minister and delegation concluded the visit by departing on the Uber Boat by Thames Clippers river bus service, which offers a connection to the riverside neighbourhood along the River Thames, with a dedicated Battersea Power Station pier. This service has been used by more than 605,000 passengers in the past 12 months.

The Battersea Power Station masterplan is delivering over 4,000 new homes, 3.5 million sq ft of mixed commercial space and 19 acres of public realm, positioned in and around the Power Station. Once completed, the development will have created 20,000 jobs as part of this new London destination and urban quarter, significantly boosting the local economy.

YB Loke Siew Fook, the Minister of Transport for Malaysia, said: “It was brilliant to tour Battersea Power Station and see how Malaysian expertise has created a brand new destination in Central London, with new transport infrastructure at its core. The Northern Line Extension has been crucial in unlocking the potential of this neighbourhood, becoming a catalyst for significant economic activity across the area. Malaysians should be proud of this international achievement, and we can take a number of learnings back home to support development in Malaysia.”

We have welcomed over 11 million people in the past 12 months, more than 40 new brands have opened their doors here and Battersea Power Station is quickly becoming an exciting office hub with Apple opening its new London campus at the heart of the Grade II* listed building and more office space set to complete before the end of 2023.”

The Grade II* listed Battersea Power Station opened to the public in October 2022 following a transformational eight-year restoration. Visitors can now enjoy over 140 shops, eateries, cafes and unique leisure experiences, as well as an annual events programme, with highlights including the Light Festival and The Battersea Games during the summer months. Battersea Power Station has also recently been announced as the official London fan zone for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Battersea Power Station has been transformed by its shareholders which have come together to form the Battersea Project Holding Company, comprising Sime Darby Property, S P Setia and the Employees Provident Fund (EPF). In 2019, leading fund management companies Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB) and EPF became the long-term commercial asset holders securing the future of the landmark for many generations to come.

• The wider Battersea Power Station development is owned by a consortium of Malaysian investors comprised of S P Setia (40%), Sime Darby Property (40%) and The Employees’ Provident Fund (20%), with the commercial assets within the Power Station building now being directly owned by Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB) and EPF.
