ARA DAMANSARA, 12 OCTOBER 2020 – Sime Darby Property Berhad diligently continued its commitment towards fighting the COVID-19 pandemic with several Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts throughout August to October, targeted towards the safekeeping of the underprivileged communities within and around its various townships.
Collaborating with its philanthropic arm Yayasan Sime Darby (YSD), the Group organised the “COVID-19 Relief Aid for Schools in Need” whereby hygiene items comprising hand sanitisers, face masks, infrared thermometers and disinfectant liquids were distributed to nine schools across the Klang Valley, Negeri Sembilan and Johor.
The programme benefitted over 8,600 students and teachers who returned to these schools after the partial lifting of the Movement Control Order (MCO). Returning students and teachers are required to strictly adhere to the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) set by the Ministry of Health (MOH) as well as the individual school’s reopening management guidelines.
As part of the internal Sime Darby Property Volunteers Programme (SDPVP), the Group also organised the “Be a Face Mask Maker with SURI Inspirasi” campaign where 30 of its employees lent their hands to make 5,000 reusable cloth face masks for underprivileged communities.
Understanding that the poor and marginalised communities are cash strapped to constantly purchase disposable face masks, SDPVP believes that the reusable cloth face masks would assist the recipients in adhering to the current SOPs without the additional financial burden.
The project was done in collaboration with SURI Inspirasi, a social enterprise that provides financial opportunities and teaches the life skill of sewing to single and underprivileged mothers in Klang. SURI Inspirasi also believes in protecting the environment through upcycling, and turns unwanted denim materials into fashionable handbags, backpacks, totes and other apparels.
Indigenous mothers from Bukit Lanjan were specially commissioned for this project that would benefit underprivileged communities within and nearby Sime Darby Property townships.
“Sime Darby Property is supportive of the socio-economic growth of the local community. It offers opportunities for employment for the local population and where possible, sources materials locally and supports the operations of smallholders,” said Sime Darby Property Group Managing Director Dato’ Azmir Merican.
He added: “This is based on the principle that prosperity is achieved through mutual growth by including communities in our value chain”.
SDPVP also organised the “One with Nature: SDPVP At Taman Tugu” campaign where volunteers underwent an educational environmental programme with Free Tree Society in partnership with Taman Tugu Project Development Sdn Bhd. The session included a guided jungle walk with talks on conservation of eco-systems and climate, environmental solutions, planting workshops and nursery management.
The “Be a Zookeeper’s Aide: SDVP at Zoo Negara” campaign saw volunteers assisting zookeepers in their daily tasks from cleaning enclosures to preparing meals for the animals. The objective of the programme was to educate the volunteers on the various wildlife species at the Zoo Negara, and how we can help create a better environment for them. SDPVP aims to make a difference through the employees’ contribution of volunteer hours.
All activities were exercised in accordance with the relevant SOPs and guidelines as mandated by the Government.
Sime Darby Property is mindful of its longstanding commitment as a sustainable property developer and remains steadfast in serving not just the underprivileged communities within and around its townships but to also make a positive impact on the environment and planet.
